When love doesn’t stop the meltdowns, it’s not failure — it’s the brain.
This week, I spoke with a group of parents through Brain Works, founded by Alma, on Understanding Big Reactions in Kids with ADHD.
Over and over, I heard the same story:
“I know my child’s not bad… but their reactions are so intense.”
“They go from calm to screaming in seconds — and I don’t know how to stop it.”
Here’s the part no one really tells parents: when a child’s brain feels overwhelmed, the logical part of the brain literally shuts down.
That’s not defiance. That’s survival mode.
And when you, as a parent, start feeling that same tension rise — your brain goes there, too.
It’s not that you’ve failed. It’s that both your systems are out of capacity.
Why calm is the first connection tool
The brain learns through safety — not through lectures or reminders.
When emotions run high, what helps isn’t more talking. It’s steadying yourself first so your child’s brain can sync with yours.
In the session, I shared a concept I call “Fire in the Brain.”
When that fire’s burning, logic can’t land.
The only way to reach your child is to cool the fire — with your calm.
Here’s how that starts:
💛 Validate the feeling, not the behavior. (“It looks like you’re frustrated.”)
💛 Breathe before you respond.
💛 Use fewer words, not more.
When we do this, we show our kids something powerful: regulation is possible.
For parents who feel everything
Many of the parents in that room were sensitive, big-feeling humans themselves.
They love their kids deeply — but they also absorb the stress around them.
If that’s you, I want you to hear this: you’re not overreacting, and you’re not weak.
You’re attuned. You notice.
And when you run out of capacity, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It means your system needs replenishing, too.
That’s why I created My Angry Parent Reset.
It’s not about “doing more” — it’s about rewiring how you start your day, so you have more calm to give.
Inside, I share 8 dopamine-based habits that help you wake up feeling steady, grounded, and actually happy — even with a grumpy kid.
Because peace at home doesn’t begin with more parenting tools.
It begins with more capacity to use them.
