Flash back to 2008…I remember finishing up a speech therapy session with 5-year-old Andrew, who had Autism. We worked so hard together, practicing communicating with words rather than hitting or meltdowns.
I felt so proud of little Drew. Every week he was growing in his ability to self-regulate and interact – our time together began to be fun!
But then, after each session when we met his dad in the lobby, he became a wild thing. Stomping around, standing on the couch, banging on the windows, and yelling.
Drew completely ignored his dad who kept reminding him to “listen” and “get down” and “be respectful.”
I wanted to say something to his dad so bad, but I didn’t know how to say it. I felt embarrassed because dad’s expectation was that I address Drew’s challenges – not his parenting.
I spent so much energy thinking about what to say, how to say it, and if dad would be open to my feedback or else feel like I was overstepping.
Ultimately, I ended up going through extensive training to become a Certified Parent Coach because I wanted tools – and permission – to better work with parents.
If you believe that a child’s best teacher is their parent but feel uncertain if you are “allowed” to address the disconnect that you see between how you interact with a child and how their parent interacts, I want to invite you to my upcoming class.
On Friday, April 8 I am offering a 6-hour online CE class for Therapists, Social Workers, Educators and Clinicians called, “Simple Tools to Support the Overwhelmed Parent: Help Parents Better Help Their Kids.”
During this interactive online class, you will learn simple and practical tools to help parents better help their kids. (Certificate for 6-clock hours will be provided)
